A Beginner’s Guide to Bonsai Tree Care

The art of bonsai is an old and established one, yet still captures the interest of many gardeners today. Trees which can be grown to maturity while only reaching a height of approximately twelve inches are not only intriguing, but hauntingly beautiful as well and will be a show piece in any home or garden. It is important to know how to care for these lovely specimens to keep them looking great over the years.

True bonsai starts with the planting of a seed or the rooting of a stem. It takes meticulous pruning, wiring and shaping over a period of years to develop the tray planting; many people prefer to purchase a bonsai that has already been cultivated. Although primarily considered art, the tree is still a living element that must be carefully maintained in order to retain its health and beauty. Each variety of the trees will have its specific needs, but there are a few basic techniques for bonsai care.

1)Bonsai are meant to be outdoors when possible and will thrive when placed in their natural environment.
2)As live plants, the bonsai will respond to the changing seasons. It should be repotted in the spring before new growth begins. In late spring, the new growth must be shaped through wiring while still flexible. Growth that does not conform to the desired appearance of the tree must be pruned away.
3)Feed the plant with a low nitrogen feed in early summer when leaves have appeared.
4)Keep the tree watered adequately; do not allow it to fully dry or to stand in water.
5)Protect the tree from windy conditions by netting it or placing other plants around it to act as a windbreak.
6)Protect the bonsai from frost and freezing conditions. In very cold climates, the tree should be brought indoors and allowed to remain in a dark, cool place as it winters over.

Learn as much as possible about the type of bonsai you have to know its specific needs for care and maintenance. While these basic instructions for bonsai care apply to almost all trees, certain varieties of trees require additional steps to keep it looking great.

The art of bonsai is such an exact and painstaking process; keeping your tree in its best condition by providing the necessary care will not only honor its meticulous development but will also ensure that it will continue to be a showpiece for many years to come.
